چکیده

Gamma-neutron activation experiments have been performed with relativistic electron beams produced by a laser wakefield accelerator. The electron beams were produced by tightly focusing ~spot diameter '6 mm) a high power ~up to 10 TW!, ultra-short (>50 fs) laser beam from a high repetition rate ~10 Hz! Ti:sapphire ~0.8 mm! laser system, onto a high density (.10 cm) pulsed gasjet of length '1.5 mm. Nuclear activation measurements in lead and copper targets indicate the production of electrons with energy in excess of 25 MeV. This result was confirmed by electron distribution measurements using a bending magnet spectrometer. Measured g-ray and neutron yields are also found to be in reasonable agreement with simulations using a Monte Carlo transport code. © 2001 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1352617#

Estimation of neutron and gamma dose in the MNSR research reactor

In this study, the neutron and gamma doses in the dry channel and in the internal irradiation site of the Miniature Neutron Source research reactor (MNSR) has been calculated and measured. The MNSR reactor is a light water reactor with a maximum power of 30 kW and equipped with various irradiation facilities, including five irradiated sites, five irradiation sites and a dry channel. The interna...

Shielding studies on a total-body neutron activation facility

Background: Prompt gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) is known as a non-invasive technique capable of measuring elemental concentration in voluminous samples in a short period of time. Also it is a valuable diagnostic tool for total body elemental measurements. 252Cf and 241Am-Be sources which are usually used in this method, generate not only neutrons, but also emit high-energy and unwa...

Laser wakefield accelerator based light sources: potential applications and requirements

In this article we review the prospects of laser wakefield accelerators as next generation light sources for applications. This work arose as a result of discussions held at the 2013 Laser Plasma Accelerators Workshop. X-ray phase contrast imaging, x-ray absorption spectroscopy, and nuclear resonance fluorescence are highlighted as potential applications for laser–plasma based light sources. We...

Generating ultrarelativistic attosecond electron bunches with laser wakefield accelerators.

Femtosecond electron bunches with ultrarelativistic energies were recently generated by laser wakefield accelerators. Here we predict that laser wakefield acceleration can generate even attosecond bunches, due to a strong chirp of the betatron frequency. We show how the bunch duration scales with the acceleration parameters and that, after acceleration, the bunches can propagate over many tens ...
